"This is the most famous of all meteor showers. It never fails to provide an impressive display and, due to its summertime appearance, it tends to provide the majority of meteors seen by non-astronomy enthusiasts."
Since we are having a late night meetup the week before this shower I feel that this could simply be an impromptu meetup and a bit of an extension of the previous one. The "The really late, but totally worth it, Starry Night Sky Meetup!" will act as a primer so that photogs that want to participate at this event will already have the skinny on what to do.
Where-->
We are NOT meeting at the pull off on the side of HWY 22. Drive past the pull off and on the right just a little past the pull off is a road that will double back, this is the road to take. Drive up the road a little bit until you are at a pull off area beside the ponds. This is the meetup area.
Here is a map.

Basket Slough National Wildlife Refuge. It has more then enough space for the lot of us and also offers different features if we want to include them in the foreground. This location also offers us some solitude from the city lights and heavy trafic.
What you need-->
-Camera - Must be able to manually focus.
-Tripod - Steady as she goes
-Extra batteris
-Cable release - Not 100% needed as you can use your timer function but very helpful. (required for very long exposures.
-Wide angle lens - Again, not 100% needed, BUT will offer the ability to capture a larger sweep of the sky. A zoom lens may also be very fun to focus on smaller sections of the sky.
Additional things to bring-->
-Flashlight -it'll be dark, remember?
-ND filter - Not sure it will help, but could offer some extra flexibility depending on what/how your shooting.
-Fold out chair - For sittin'
-Snack/water - Might find yourself out there for a bit, never hurts.
-Light jacket & good walking shoes. - Still gets a hair nippy at night ;)
-Good attitude and a witty humor. Well, the humor is optional but highly recommended! :D
I agree that there is a gate and it will be closed at night. I just checked the website and copied the following regarding access to the Baskett Slough refuge...
Refuges, including roads and trails, are open from sunrise to sunset.
Gates? What gates? I've been going there for a long time; I've never seen a gate. I'll drive over there now and check it out. I'll keep you posted.
Ok now I got it. The gated entry is to the little observation building immediately off the freeway. We're not going there. We're going to the main area where the water/slough is and along those roads to the walk-in areas and up to the high observation point. There are no gates here EXCEPT during flood times...and we're certainly not seeing any floods right now.
oK i MUST not be thinking of the right area. I am thinking of right when you are driving to the beach...and off to the right there is a little observation point thats the only place I've ever gone to for the basket slough...hmmm so there must be a different place that I just have never gone. have fun!
i'M JUST curious where exactly this is then..can someone write on here the exact directions I want to go to this place sometime..I guess I never have?
Kim...Here's a google map link...yes, it's a big long link...

Posted a couple images from Baskett Slough taken this morning.
I have been there after dark, a week ago and they gates were open. Even if they close the gates with us in there, they open for exiting vehicles... I read the sign.
Where we're going in the Slough there are no gates. The only gate is the gate to the observation deck immediately off the highway. We're not going there. We're going along the road INSIDE the Slough. From there we go up the hill to another observation point and elsewhere to shoot everything. There are no gates.
I tried logging on to that link and got an

The place Nate is talking about is a public road. It runs through Baskett Slough between the ponds. There is plenty of room for several vehicles. This will be a great meetup site. I have been to this place 100s of times.
Oh and also there is a restroom a quarter mile up the road that is accessible after dark.
My show will be done at 6:oo and I may head up a little early to meander around a bit. If anyone else if going early, let me know. I will see you tomorrow.
I am going to try to be there a it early myself, Nyla what time are you going?

I was talking to some members last night and I'm wondering if they keep those gates open later than like 9pm? Just a little thought to make sure tht you can get in! Hope it works out great! I won't be able to go but I bet it will be awesome!
