Where your Adventure will lead:

Three main stops are planned:

Koosha and Sahalie Falls
John Day Fossil Beds Painted Hills Unit / Mitchell, OR
Shaniko, OR Ghost town.

Koosha and Sahalie falls are two mid sized but picturesque falls located on the McKenzie river about 5 miles down OR 126 off Hwy 22. There is a short hike along the river between the two. This will be our first stop with possible stops for views of the Sisters along our way to the Painted Hills.

For those who have not spent time in eastern Oregon you'll be surprised by the beauty this part of the state offers. The Painted Hills have a beauty all their own which changes with the weather conditions. The late afternoon light does wonders to bring them out. These are a nature photographers dream come true. Depending on the time we get there we may pop into the town of Mitchell just down the road and see if my old friend "Henry" the black bear is still around. The town itself has it's fair share of picture possibilities.

When done there we will head back to Prineville to check in to the hotel and grab some dinner. If we still have light or not and you would like to shoot some pics in Prineville go for it. However we will have a relatively early start on Sunday. If you bring your laptop this would be a good time to do some sorting of your images.

Sunday we head out after breakfast to Shaniko, one of many Oregon ghost towns. Here you will find old buildings, old cars and just about any "OLD" thing you like. There are antique shops and the Shaniko hotel. There is also a distance view of the back side of Mt. Hood. This is a great place to work your creative side. Just plain fun to shoot.

We may get lunch at the restaurant there but will head out not later then mid afternoon. We could go north to I-84 to return or back the way we came. We will decide there.

What to Bring:

Food and drinks of your choice because we will be eating on the run or roadside. Highly recommend a cooler that is iced up before we leave, refill in Prineville.
Gas up before arriving at K-Mart.
Appropriate clothing, HATS, SUNBLOCK, rain gear (Hey it's Oregon)
Oh you might want to bring a Camera, lens or two, tripod and flash, laptop, cell phone.

Carpooling or Room Sharing:

Leave note on this meetup and arrange with those who might like to do the same.

We do have some radios that work pretty good, On the cycle, we couldn't use them.. but more than happy to bring them and let ya'll try. If some have more, than we could call but not listen.... so... if someone else ALSO has them, then we just pick a channel and listen. I'm rambling, but I'll bring our set, and the more we have the better then.

Terry...I'm in! See you in the parking lot. Luggage? One camera bag, one tripod and one small overnight duffel. I'm sure we can determine chip-in costs down the road. Thank you!

Do we want to get a list of cell phones - just in case some of us (like me) get lost - I may not spent to much time at the falls as I have been there a number of times - so I may head east earlier than the group- and then regroup later for pizza or what ever. . .

Yes, let's exchange tel#'s when we meet in the parking lot. Jim G. is bringing radios for those times when cell service is dead.

Gerry, no problem with you doing it but cells may not work in some areas and we may make other stops if time permits on the way to the hills. The good light hits the painted hills late in the day. May see you at the meetup tonight but will be getting phone # and emergency contact info before we leave the parking lot.

Paul, there are no entry fees to the places we are going but donations are accepted at the P. Hills. Other cash expenses will be for food, gas and lodging if your not using debit or credit cards.

This was a great trip and Jim is to be congratulated on a job well done. As usual I learned new things on this shoot as well as having a blast, sharing a lot of laughs and getting to know some of you guys just a little bit better. Thanks to Joel my life is enriched with the newly acquired knowledge of what constitutes an Earth Rise. Shawn and I veered off from the group to visit with family and see an area we'd been wanting to visit but the time spent as a group was memorable.

Jim did a good job trying to keep this independent group on track and getting to our goals. I enjoyed the trip, but I was accompanied by a non-photographer, and had to balance the trip. The two venues that I attended, the Falls and the Painted Hills, were very nice, and well worth the trip. Motorcycle ended up very dusty by the end, but we were glad Jim let us go first! Chris had enough pollen and dust up her nose, and his thoughts were kind.. The group was fun! And glad the purse was found.

This was an outstanding event! My wife and I had to bow out of the second day's shoot because she had lost her purse. Luckily there are honest people in Prineville and one of the managers at Rays Grocery called our hotel this morning and asked if someone there had lost a purse...whew...that sure saved a nosebleed! On top of that I left Painted Hills early because my 5D2 would not turn on...ouch! It turned out the battery grip had loosened up just a hair but enough to lose juice so all is well now. With all of this drama it still was a great trip. One thing I was very impressed with (among others) was Jim Curzio being thoughtful enough to stop our caravan of cars at the paved entrance to Painted Hills and allowing Paul and his wife (who were on his motrocycle) to go to the front of the caravan because we would soon be on a gravel road and they would have had to eat a lot of dust. Nice job Jim! Jim Grant
